Florida Tree Diseases We Diagnose and Treat
Florida trees face a specific set of disease threats that are different from most other states. Correct diagnosis matters because treatment options, urgency, and removal decisions all depend on what's actually wrong.
Florida Foliage is the tree disease treatment Daytona Beach company that shows up on time, does the job right, and leaves your property clean.
Laurel Wilt
Laurel wilt is caused by a fungus spread by the redbay ambrosia beetle. It kills laurel oaks, swamp bays, and redbays rapidly, typically within weeks to months of infection. Infected trees show wilting, browning foliage, and eventually die. There's no cure. Infected trees should be removed promptly to slow the spread of the beetle to neighboring trees. If your laurel oak is declining, call us.
Ganoderma Root Rot
Ganoderma is a fungal root pathogen common in Florida's palms and many broadleaf species. The visible sign is a conk (shelf mushroom) at the base of the tree. By the time the conk appears, the root system is already compromised. There's no treatment, but we can assess how much structural integrity remains to help you make a removal decision.
Hypoxylon Canker
Hypoxylon canker attacks stressed oaks. It appears as areas of dead bark and can spread rapidly under drought stress. Trees with significant canker spread typically need removal. Trees with limited infection and good root health may recover if stress is relieved.
Pythium Root Rot
Pythium is a water mold that attacks roots in saturated soils. In Florida's rainy season, poorly drained areas are high-risk zones. Affected trees show declining canopy, wilting, and eventual death. Improving drainage and treating with appropriate fungicides can save affected trees if caught early.

Scheduling a Disease Diagnosis for Your Tree in Volusia County
If you've noticed unusual leaf discoloration, bark abnormalities, fungal growth, or dieback in your tree's crown, call (386) 481-7913 or fill in the estimate form above. Describe the symptoms and how long they've been present. A photo sent by text before the site visit often lets our ISA Certified Arborist narrow the possible diagnoses before arriving, which makes the on-site evaluation more efficient.
Not every tree problem is a disease. Symptoms that look like disease are sometimes caused by nutrient deficiency, root damage, compaction stress, or improper prior pruning. Getting an accurate diagnosis before starting treatment prevents wasted money on products that don't address the actual problem. We give you the honest evaluation first, and if the condition isn't treatable, we tell you that directly rather than selling you a treatment program that won't help the tree.
Tree Disease Treatment in Daytona Beach and Volusia County
Florida's warm, humid climate is ideal for tree diseases. Fungal pathogens thrive in the conditions that Volusia County trees experience year-round, and bacterial diseases spread faster in high temperatures. Florida Foliage's ISA Certified Arborists diagnose and treat tree diseases for homeowners and commercial property owners across Daytona Beach, Port Orange, Ormond Beach, Holly Hill, Palm Coast, DeLand, and Deltona. Understanding which disease is affecting a tree is the first step because treatment approaches differ widely. Hypoxylon canker in live oaks and water oaks is a secondary infection that follows stress, and the treatment involves addressing the underlying stress rather than the fungus directly. Fusiform rust in slash pines causes distinctive galls that weaken branch structure and require assessment of whether affected branches need removal. Lethal bronzing disease in palms is caused by a phytoplasma spread by sap-feeding insects, moves quickly through a palm's vascular system, and has no treatment once symptoms are advanced. Ganoderma in sabal palms causes basal rot that is not treatable and indicates the tree needs removal before it fails. Getting the diagnosis right is not just about choosing the right product. In many cases, the correct diagnosis leads to a different decision entirely, whether that is removing a diseased tree before it fails or adjusting irrigation and fertilization practices to reduce stress that is making a tree susceptible to disease.
Common Tree Diseases in Volusia County
The tree diseases we encounter most often in Volusia County include hypoxylon canker on stressed oaks, which produces a distinctive silvery bark and powdery spore masses, Ganoderma root rot in palms, which causes conks at the base and a rapidly declining canopy, laurel wilt spread by the redbay ambrosia beetle, which affects sassafras and related species in Florida forests, and various Phytophthora root and trunk rots that affect trees in poorly drained or over-irrigated areas. Our ISA Certified Arborists identify these conditions through visual inspection and, when needed, can recommend laboratory confirmation for complex or unclear cases.

(386) 481-7913Frequently Asked Questions
Is laurel wilt always fatal?
Yes. Laurel wilt has no cure. Once a laurel oak is infected, removal is the recommended course of action to prevent the ambrosia beetle from spreading to neighboring trees. The faster the infected tree is removed, the less beetle activity is generated from it.

How do I know if my tree has ganoderma?
The most visible sign is a conk or shelf fungus at the base of the trunk or on the root flare. Not all ganoderma cases produce a visible conk. Our ISA Certified Arborists can assess other signs including bark discoloration and spongy wood at the trunk base.
Can diseased trees be treated or do they always need removal?
It depends on the disease. Some diseases are fatal regardless of treatment. Others are manageable if caught early. The only way to know is a proper diagnosis. We don't recommend removal without assessing whether treatment is a viable alternative.
